Healthy Marriage Movie Guide: The Pursuit of Happyness

Image
Discuss: Sacrifice รจ Chris Gardner works very hard, wanting to provide for his wife (girlfriend) and son (scene 1). What does the expression of sacrifice show to those we love? Should the effort be good enough? รจ When Chris was told he was chosen out of the 20 interns, the head of the firm asked him, “Was it as easy as it looked?”   No, but it was worth it. Marriage takes work, but it is something to be worked for, because there can be immense joy found by having someone to share everything with, someone you can be completely transparent with. What advice would you give someone asking you about marriage as a whole? Morals รจ Chris tells the Man at the day care that they should fix the wall, where there are inappropriate words graffitied on it. He points out things that do not uplift. How can you implement this in your marriage? How does having strong morals add dimension to your marriage relationship/do they? รจ   Chris is left in a taxi cab; he has ...

If You're Into It, I'm Into It!

Image
My husband LOVES when I just want to watch him "in the zone" of his hobbies. He finds it very attractive. A perfect date to him would be where I went outside to where he has all of his "toys" and watched him "tinker" with his tools. He would build a new contraption by cutting and welding metals together and I would look very quizzical. Explaining how or why he is doing something or how something works is also something he loves. I love watching him in his element, too. Another great part to this kind of date is when I might try my hand at these things he is expertly inclined for. One night a couple weeks ago, after the kids were in bed, I joined him in the yard as he was finishing up a trailer he was building. I grabbed his second welding hood and was handed his square pad to kneel on so that I could get up close and watch his welding techniques. I had my knees in about the center of this smooth, leather pad. When the sparks started flying, I started sc...

Disc Golf

Image
At Old Dominion Mine Park you can find a Disc Golf course right across from the Playground. Make use of this great space and throw some Frisbees!  Just try not to send them soaring to the  highway below! Marriage Reconnect A great way to strengthen any relationship is to learn something together. If you can throw a Frisbee, or even if you can't (your spouse can teach you!) Check out some details on how to play Disc Golf.   A simple tutorial on the different discs used in the sport Be sure to take advantage of this opportunity to chat with each other about anything. Dates are about making connections and when married it is often about reconnecting. Enjoy this laid back time to share things that have been going on in your lives.

History...Family History

Image
Let's get the details on who we are and who they are. I have always acted as though family history work is not for me. I struggle with it. I struggle with technology. I like reading stories, but I thought that was about it. Recently my husband and I took a little date night for focusing on learning about some of our family lines. It can be so cool! It is interesting to learn where different ancestors were born and lived. What is really cool is just the fact that so many people have put in so much effort to preserve history of different people and that we have archives available to us with census information, marriage dates, and pictures and stories.  FamilySearch  is a great place to start, because it is free to everyone and has loads of information in it's archives. Marriage Reconnect Read up on an ancestor from yours and your spouse's side of the family. It is interesting how we claim people as family from years and years ago that we have never known. My husband was...

Old Dominion Historic Mine Tour

Image
It all started with mining and it really is still all about mining. Head to the Historic Old Dominion Mine Park to get some fresh air and take a self-guided tour of old mine property. Go hand in hand on this date and enjoy the view off the side of the hill. Seeing the pictures on the information boards throughout the park really made me think about what life was like back in the Old West. Standing on the very ground where work was bustling and being able to see and touch a lot of the actual equipment that was used for years. Marriage Reconnect After you do all the exploring and learning about mining and the old Globe life, change focus to your own work life. Are you on track to where you want to be?  Talk about the dreams and goals you both have and look back on how far you have come while married. Times when we have discussed how we got to where we are, we have been humbled and also seen how our relationship has developed along the way. Day in and day out work i...

Make it at Home...ICE CREAM

Image
Seriously though, if you are an ice cream fan or human you probably love homemade ice cream. I am pretty much ice cream's biggest fan and my husband really enjoys eating ice cream with me. We have some great late night conversations over ice cream. If you are running short on time or energy for a date night, homemade ice cream and chatting on the porch is a fantastic idea. You can get creative with your add-in's if you'd like. Create your own peanut butter and chocolate ice cream or strawberry...really you could think of SO many options. Marriage Reconnect A great discussion to have while you are relaxing together is about hot topics or things that tend to bring up the stress between the two of you. I don't mean discuss these things for date night, but rather make a plan for when these topics can and should be brought up. I have this nasty habit of throwing a pie in my husband's face the second he walks in the door after work (figuratively).  Though I know...

Act it Out!

Image
Surely you have lines from your favorite movies down by heart. My husband will attest to me quoting Finding Nemo at very least weekly since he has known me. Not to say that is my all time favorite movie, but scenes and words sometimes really stick with us. Have you ever thought of getting into acting? Tonight is your night to practice...both of you.  This is sure to bring out some laughs and smiles. Life sometimes becomes so serious and it is hard to find the time or even know how to break loose with each other. You could even do this at the park at dusk...que dramatic lighting. If you need to, print off some lines or refresh your memory by watching some clips of your favorite scenes. Record each other as you act out these parts. Be dramatic! 1.       “….such playfulness is extremely good for relationships. What does it require? A willingness to turn toward another’s sense of silliness, give oneself over to the moment, and have a little bit...

Game Time!

Image
This is a pretty simple date and though it is a well known couple or group activity, I have found that my husband and I rarely use it as a go to. Surely you have a game or two in the closet. In our house, we each have our favorite game and it is so fun when we pull out the games to find out who is going to win, even at the game that I claim to not understand! ๐Ÿ˜œ Go all out with popcorn, pop, and favorite snacks. Even better, invest in a game that you have heard all about, but haven't yet played. My all time favorite two player game is Rubik's race. It is pretty much finishing one side of a rubik's cube, but two dimensional. It's the BEST. It isn't really my husband's cup of tea...because I slaughter him. He prefers Settler's of Catan, so when we do pull out the games we typically play both. Marriage Reconnect Whatever type of game you choose, even if it be a simple card game...enjoy the competition. Fun competition like playing games can be so f...

Reflections

Image
This date could be pretty fun! It's time to get creative with the camera and with recognizing what you wouldn't regularly recognize or pay attention to.  Together you will work on a scavenger hunt for any and all reflections of yourself. Reflections in windows, on the side of a shiny car, in water, and what else? Snap pictures of the reflections you find. Reflections are everywhere. Get creative and be outgoing and adventurous with this. Laugh and talk with your best friend. So, where am I going with this? Work together to reflect on the best dates and times you have had together while married and before you were married. Are there things that you used to love doing as a couple and need to start up again? Is there something you should do so that you can reflect back on it in the future? Think of the memories you have made and resolve to make new memories. Maybe even start a list! This is a great morning date and then you could go grab some breakfast burros from your favo...

Splish, Splash! Time to Cool Off!!

Image
Swimming can be some of the best summer fun in Arizona. Leave the kids behind with friends or a babysitter and head to the local pool as a couple. When married and as parents it can be hard to relax when around water, so here's a chance to just have fun. Have swim competitions, coolest jump off the diving board, really anything you can think of. The Miami Hostetler Pool is a great place to get in some swim time and enjoy the sun! When you are all done with the fun in the sun, go right down the street to Soda Pops for some ice cream and old fashioned soda! Marriage Reconnect Do you see your spouse as a safe place? Can you talk to them about things that worry you and bother you? Open up and be in a judgement free zone. It is such a great thing to be able to be completely vulnerable within marriage. Lift each other up and encourage. Just listen and only offer advice if it is asked for.

Visiting the Elderly

This date night activity is sure to bring smiles to you and your spouse, but also to those you visit. Spending time at nursing homes is time well spent. Many residents often do not have visitors or new faces to talk to and interact with. There are different things you can do when visiting a nursing home. Ideas: Call ahead and ask what supplies may be needed for residents (collect and then donate) Play board games Sing to them Read books or poems Interview residents   Questionnaires:   https://www.huffingtonpost.com/karl-a-pillemer-phd/listening-to-elders_b_4200329.html https://www.aegisliving.com/resource-center/30-questions-to-ask-your-grandparents/ (Add and search for more questions!) There are two skilled nursing facilities in Globe: Haven of Globe Heritage Health Care Center Contact the before heading over to see if there are any specifics on best times to chat with residents and what kind of interactions would be most beneficial! Water Sports

Image
Have you ever lived somewhere that had plenty of activities available to you and yet you just never got around to participating, life got in the way and then you moved and realized you never experienced what was right in front of you? Living in Globe, there are so many different outdoor activities that can be reached for a day trip. Roosevelt Lake is close enough that you can have great day trips. Use what equipment you have, can borrow, or purchase such as paddle boards, kayaks, boats, and more. Head out for a day at the lake. It's great to be able to take a day and live in vacation mode with the spouse. Enjoy the sunshine, water, and whatever activity you choose. Check out the Forest Service website for needed  Passes  and additional information you may need for these outings.

Steak House

Image
Fancy dates are a great way to get out and see each other in a different setting. Your spouse is the person you should want to look your best for; their opinion counts the most. Get ready and go out to the Apache Gold Casino for date night.  A steakhouse is a great choice for date night--a hearty meal and great time for conversation. Marriage Reconnect Time to get to know your spouse even more! Take time to think up things  your spouse may not know about you and play 2 truths and a lie together. It is interesting how even 5 years with my husband; there are things that come up often that I must not have told him about myself, he forgot, or that just seem to be a mystery. Have a fun filled night without the regular, day to day worries!

Strike a Pose!

Image
Photography is a big deal these days. There are so many professional photographers; a lot of them just put in time and effort into practicing to be able to do what they do. Today/tonight, be the photographers and be the models. Go around town or wherever you think would be a great back drop and photograph your spouse. Work on your skills and enjoy getting your spouse to smile or getting a moody shot of them. Marriage Reconnect Are there any places in town that are special for the two of you, or either one of you? See if you can get a picture of yourself in front of the first place you lived in Globe, a shot in front of your current home, your favorite store, or even something funny. Here is a 'model' picture of me by the car that we had when we were first married.  Behind is our first apartment. I was pretending to be a car model as we took  pictures of it so we could sell it.

Ghost Town

Image
You live in an old, Arizona ghost/mining town. This town is full of rich history and the history is alive! Keep up on the schedules of different tours and happenings in Globe. This would be a great date. There are jail tours, tours of the old courthouse building (currently the Post Office), and Cemetery Tours.    There are exciting presentations happening at different times throughout the year that will take you back to a time once alive in Globe. There were outlaws and many other exciting things happening. Marriage Reconnect Depending on what community tour or activity you participate in, it will be a great opportunity to be with your honey. There are really great ghost stories in all the tours, which leaves a lot to discuss. These kinds of dates are much more interactive than watching a movie together.

Litter Lifters

Image
Time to pick up some garbage. You could definitely contact the city  to find out about any clean up days that may be scheduled to join in on, but don't hesitate to get out and help beautify the community. Throughout the week before your date, take note of areas around town that seem to need some extra care, i.e. along the highway. Get out with your spouse, hats and sunscreen are advised, and clean up the area. Pick up trash, rake, whatever is going to help make the area look better than how you found it. Also at the above link is a list of the different parks in the community, which would all be great alternate, more secluded choices for litter lifting. Marriage Reconnect Since you are getting rid of unnecessary garbage physically, view the following video and talk about what you (yourself) can get rid of in the relationship. It is not time for pointing fingers, but to do some self-reflection. Take this time to apologize if you need to and resolve to put into practice...

Fire Watch

Image
Experience something new with this unique hike. Have you heard of fire towers? Throughout the summer months there are locations on the highest hills throughout the forest where a person keeps watch for any fires. You can visit and they may even give you a small tour of their equipment, books, and tell you any of the history of the area. Read here about a historic tower in Grand Canyon National Park. My husband visited McFadden Peak  Lookout by happenstance when he was out with his boy scout troop.  It was staffed and the lookout gal, there for the summer, gave them a tour and showed them how she would pin point a fire and notify the necessary people, if there were a fire spotted. Marriage Reconnect The reason for fire towers is to be able to get an eye on a fire as soon as it starts...to put it out fast, with the least amount of damage.  We should keep an eye out for fires within our marriages. Dr. John Gottman says that we should work on solving ...

Pinal Mountain--Pioneer Pass

Image
Camp or hike and enjoy some mountain air! Take a little couples retreat out of the heat. How awesome would it be to take your honey up into the pines for a relaxing getaway? There is a great hike up to the electrical towers with great views. Pioneer Pass is a great camping area nestled right into the shady pines. Marriage Reconnect Camping and/or hiking often takes us back to the basics.  "Many  things  are good, many are important, but only a  few  are  essential ."—D. Todd Christofferson.  What are essential ingredients to making your marriage last and making your marriage full of love?  If you choose for this date to be a camp out, enjoy sitting up late around the campfire with your spouse. Spend this time with your spouse..time is essential.

Historic Downtown Stroll

Image
Throughout my time in Globe I have noticed varying foot bridges and stairs in the old town area, over washes and up hill sides. Well, follow the directions at this link so that you can trek the "trails" that were once used for daily travel to and from work, school, and other activities in the old mining town of Globe.  This is a chance to look at your surroundings in a different way and from a different view..don't forget to hold hands! Marriage Reconnect Talk about and analyze your physical touch with your spouse. It is so important to be physically connected in our day to day coming and goings. Do you kiss each other throughout the day? Do you hug before one of you leaves the house? Set a goal that will increase your physical touch and see what difference it can make in your love connection.

SSsssshhhhhhhhhh!!!

Image
Library Date!  You probably wouldn't think of a library date--that's so college. But seriously, the local library can be loads of fun and here you have two choices--Globe or Miami Library. The Miami Library is actually a historic building; it was the Miami High School Gym and has a lot of memorabilia and history within...they probably have a few history books too.  ๐Ÿ˜† Marriage Reconnect Play a game at the library. Of course, keep it within reason and library appropriate...ssshhhh! Examples: Dictionary War--each of you get a dictionary. You can find outrageous words and see if the other knows what they mean or find words to describe each other. Battle it out! Conversations completely from the lines on the page. You can use regular books or poetry books. Have a conversation...using only lines from the book you chose.  Find a movie to check out and head home for a cuddly afternoon. Read children stories to each other. Practice your expressive reading abi...
