Old Dominion Historic Mine Tour

Image
It all started with mining and it really is still all about mining. Head to the Historic Old Dominion Mine Park to get some fresh air and take a self-guided tour of old mine property. Go hand in hand on this date and enjoy the view off the side of the hill. Seeing the pictures on the information boards throughout the park really made me think about what life was like back in the Old West. Standing on the very ground where work was bustling and being able to see and touch a lot of the actual equipment that was used for years. Marriage Reconnect After you do all the exploring and learning about mining and the old Globe life, change focus to your own work life. Are you on track to where you want to be?  Talk about the dreams and goals you both have and look back on how far you have come while married. Times when we have discussed how we got to where we are, we have been humbled and also seen how our relationship has developed along the way. Day in and day out work i...

Make it at Home...ICE CREAM

Image
Seriously though, if you are an ice cream fan or human you probably love homemade ice cream. I am pretty much ice cream's biggest fan and my husband really enjoys eating ice cream with me. We have some great late night conversations over ice cream. If you are running short on time or energy for a date night, homemade ice cream and chatting on the porch is a fantastic idea. You can get creative with your add-in's if you'd like. Create your own peanut butter and chocolate ice cream or strawberry...really you could think of SO many options. Marriage Reconnect A great discussion to have while you are relaxing together is about hot topics or things that tend to bring up the stress between the two of you. I don't mean discuss these things for date night, but rather make a plan for when these topics can and should be brought up. I have this nasty habit of throwing a pie in my husband's face the second he walks in the door after work (figuratively).  Though I know...

Act it Out!

Image
Surely you have lines from your favorite movies down by heart. My husband will attest to me quoting Finding Nemo at very least weekly since he has known me. Not to say that is my all time favorite movie, but scenes and words sometimes really stick with us. Have you ever thought of getting into acting? Tonight is your night to practice...both of you.  This is sure to bring out some laughs and smiles. Life sometimes becomes so serious and it is hard to find the time or even know how to break loose with each other. You could even do this at the park at dusk...que dramatic lighting. If you need to, print off some lines or refresh your memory by watching some clips of your favorite scenes. Record each other as you act out these parts. Be dramatic! 1.       “….such playfulness is extremely good for relationships. What does it require? A willingness to turn toward another’s sense of silliness, give oneself over to the moment, and have a little bit...

Rah, Rah Radish!

Image
Got gardening on the brain? Ever dabbled in gardening? In college my husband and I took a home gardening course together and really enjoyed the content. The most important thing I learned was that no matter where you live, how small your living quarters are, you can find a way to garden. There are so many great ideas online since the whole tiny living movement. You can garden in old soda bottles, cups, and more. When we were first married we got permission from our landlord to tear out some ugly bushes from a planter under our window and use the space for a garden. To maximize my gardening area I also planted tomato plants in some buckets that I bought for $1 at the Walmart bakery (they were old frosting buckets). (My first home garden! I think I need to take my advice on this date idea and get my garden going with my husband!) Marriage Reconnect  Put your heads together and decide on a gardening project, be it big or small, and get to it! Gardening is known to be very...

Reflections

Image
This date could be pretty fun! It's time to get creative with the camera and with recognizing what you wouldn't regularly recognize or pay attention to.  Together you will work on a scavenger hunt for any and all reflections of yourself. Reflections in windows, on the side of a shiny car, in water, and what else? Snap pictures of the reflections you find. Reflections are everywhere. Get creative and be outgoing and adventurous with this. Laugh and talk with your best friend. So, where am I going with this? Work together to reflect on the best dates and times you have had together while married and before you were married. Are there things that you used to love doing as a couple and need to start up again? Is there something you should do so that you can reflect back on it in the future? Think of the memories you have made and resolve to make new memories. Maybe even start a list! This is a great morning date and then you could go grab some breakfast burros from your favo...

Visiting the Elderly

This date night activity is sure to bring smiles to you and your spouse, but also to those you visit. Spending time at nursing homes is time well spent. Many residents often do not have visitors or new faces to talk to and interact with. There are different things you can do when visiting a nursing home. Ideas: Call ahead and ask what supplies may be needed for residents (collect and then donate) Play board games Sing to them Read books or poems Interview residents   Questionnaires:   https://www.huffingtonpost.com/karl-a-pillemer-phd/listening-to-elders_b_4200329.html https://www.aegisliving.com/resource-center/30-questions-to-ask-your-grandparents/ (Add and search for more questions!) There are two skilled nursing facilities in Globe: Haven of Globe Heritage Health Care Center Contact the before heading over to see if there are any specifics on best times to chat with residents and what kind of interactions would be most beneficial! Water Sports

Image
Have you ever lived somewhere that had plenty of activities available to you and yet you just never got around to participating, life got in the way and then you moved and realized you never experienced what was right in front of you? Living in Globe, there are so many different outdoor activities that can be reached for a day trip. Roosevelt Lake is close enough that you can have great day trips. Use what equipment you have, can borrow, or purchase such as paddle boards, kayaks, boats, and more. Head out for a day at the lake. It's great to be able to take a day and live in vacation mode with the spouse. Enjoy the sunshine, water, and whatever activity you choose. Check out the Forest Service website for needed  Passes  and additional information you may need for these outings.

Crawdadin'

Image
Have you ever caught crawdads? Look it up and decide on a method of how you want to go about getting them. You are going to want to be able to catch enough to have a little fry and enjoy them! Head out to Roosevelt Lake and hangout while trying to catch crawdads. One hot summer night we were out there wading only about knee deep, but had a great time catching them by hand....I may or may not have just observed the whole "catching" part.  😆 Marriage Reconnect It's so cool that there is a lake close where you can enjoy different types of recreation. Get out at night and enjoy looking up at the stars. Remember to live in the moment. This is something that is hard to do with the day in and day out monotonousness of life, but it is probably something that you and your spouse enjoyed doing when you were first together.

Strike a Pose!

Image
Photography is a big deal these days. There are so many professional photographers; a lot of them just put in time and effort into practicing to be able to do what they do. Today/tonight, be the photographers and be the models. Go around town or wherever you think would be a great back drop and photograph your spouse. Work on your skills and enjoy getting your spouse to smile or getting a moody shot of them. Marriage Reconnect Are there any places in town that are special for the two of you, or either one of you? See if you can get a picture of yourself in front of the first place you lived in Globe, a shot in front of your current home, your favorite store, or even something funny. Here is a 'model' picture of me by the car that we had when we were first married.  Behind is our first apartment. I was pretending to be a car model as we took  pictures of it so we could sell it.

Antiquing!

Image
This date could easily go on for days and days in the Globe-Miami area! I suggest deciding on either Miami or Globe as to not get too overwhelmed or frustrated that you don't make it to everything. As you saunter through the different antique stores, enjoy the unique things from past eras and talk about what life would have been like for you as a couple if it were the 20's, 40's, 60's, etc. Marriage Reconnect Reminisce on what could have been and think about things that you could do now that are from different decades...things that shouldn't have gotten lost in time. Try to implement some things into your life. Dress up a little more for each other..wear lipstick and kiss that man on the cheek! Find ways in which you can simplify your lives so that there will be more time for each other.

Date Night

Image
This date is all about flirting, dressing up, thinking of the other, chivalry, and really all the things. Start the day being flirtatious. Ideas: write a love note on the bathroom mirror  make breakfast for the other  leave a note in his lunch  kiss before work bring home flowers dress up let her get ready for the date kid free! Pick her up--ring the door bell! wear perfume open her door Wherever you decide to eat, get comfortable. Don't rush through this meal (like we all tend to do). Enjoy appetizers, entrees, and dessert. Don't be afraid of extravagance. Marriage Reconnect This breaks you out of the habit of only doing certain things when occasion calls for it. You can "celebrate" when there is "nothing" to celebrate. Recognize how good it felt to do something special and try to implement more of the spark back into your relationship. Watch the following video together:  Be genuinely interested in your spouse!

K. I. S. S. I. N. G.

Image
Spice up your date with this game. It's time to be lip locked. Is it possible to kiss your husband or wife too much? No, just no. That is not even a question. At the start of your date, make some rules. You need a list of trigger words and topics that if brought up will = kisses. You want there to be a lot of random kissing! PDA please! Some time during your date play the following game: You need to have a full conversation without your lips parting. So talk and kiss at the same time. You're Welcome!

Swap Meet!

Image
Run to the far end of town (ok, you can drive) on a weekend and go to the Globe Park n' Swap. Make a game of it and set a limit for each other, say $10? Now you can decide if you want to find things you actually need/want or weird things...but see which of you can be the best bargain finder and/or haggler! Enjoy the competition. Marriage Reconnect Share with each other something you learned in the past week. Often times we don't reflect on the things that we have seen, done, or learned in a week--not recognizing that we are becoming better, smarter, and stronger. You may have to dig through your mind on this one, but it doesn't have to be extraordinary. This is another way to bond with your spouse; possibly they will have questions about the thing you shared or maybe you will have something come up that you both want to learn more about.

Bowling!

Image
Oh, you didn't know there was a place to bowl in the Globe area? Well, there isn't really in the traditional sense, but this date gets you outside and doing something a little different. Some prep work is needed.  Need: A bowling ball (or 2)----these can be found at pretty much any thrift store Glow sticks 10 similar sized containers filled with water (water bottles, old soda bottles, Gatorade bottles....) great shoes (really this could just be a great addition----everyone where their "best bowling shoes") Little Caesars pizza Head to the Community Center Park or anywhere else with a stretch of flat concrete that can act as your bowling lane. Put a glow stick in each bottle and then use the rest of the glow sticks to line the sides of the "alley".  The rest is really up to you......can you even hit any of the "pins"?  Of course you will have to take turns setting up pins and bowling.  Enjoy your pizza! Staycation!

Image
There are some great, historic inns here in downtown Globe. The Chrysocolla Inn . This Inn was once a boarding house during the turn of the century, as Globe was booming. Another unique, local inn is the Noftsger Hill Inn. This inn was once a school, therefore it boasts of spacious rooms with sitting areas and wonderful historic memorabilia.  Marriage Reconnect Enjoy your own marriage retreat here in this historic community. Just enjoy relaxing together: be it reading side by side or together on a shaded porch or garden area, learning about mining history or ghost stories, just be present and keep away from the usual topics of kids, house, work, chores, etc.

This is Our Theme Song

Image
Nest down at the Copper Hen for some unique cuisine. The atmosphere is fun and the smells coming from the kitchen will make it hard to decide on what to order. There is often live music to enjoy while you experience the flavor blasts occurring in your mouth. Music is the second focus of this date night.  Marriage Reconnect    Do you and your spouse have a special song? A wedding song? Does it represent you well? Whether you do or don't, find a theme song for your relationship.  Maybe share some of your favorite music from times past. Do you have similar music tastes?  Have fun listening to different tracks and finding something that can be your go to song. Share your favorite songs from high school and middle school. This could be interesting!

Nurd Lyfe

Image
NurdBerger is a great burger joint and it screams nerd! Sometimes we just need to be as confident as a nerd and that is what this date is about. How confident can you be as a couple? What is a nerdy movie or show that the two of you can agree on? Featured at the Nurdberger Cafe is Lord of The Rings, Star Wars, Pokemon, and more. The possibilities are endless. Start your date by dressing up in some way--related to something nerdy. This date is bound to bring out some laughs and you may relish in the attention or hurry home from embarrassment. Get into character and enjoy some good food! Finish the date at home watching one of your favorite nerdy movies.

Need a Babysitter? No Problem!

Image
Wouldn't it be nice not to have to pay a babysitter every time you wanted to get out alone? There are a lot of other couples thinking the same thing. Spend this date night setting up a babysitting rotation with some other couples. Decide on a group of friends and text them to see if they are interested. Set to work figuring out details. Possibility:  First Friday of every month two of the 4-6 couples involved take a turn to watch all the kiddos while the other couples go out. Those going out can decide if they want to do a group date or disperse. You get a free date night or two for every time you "take one for the team" and handle the zoo of children.

How Messy Do You Want to Be?

Image
Tonight your goal should be no (or minimal) dirty dishes. Staying home can sometimes feel like a punishment for date night, but dates at home can also be some of our most memorable. After the kids are in bed, it's time for dinner on the floor. You decide how messy or clean you want this meal to be, but put down a sheet or a plastic drop cloth. If you want to have some good fun, eat/serve a spaghetti dinner right on the drop cloth. Sit on the floor and eat with your hands. Marriage Reconnect Sometimes breaking out of our mundane routines and our comfort zones is just what we need to reconnect and unwind. As you go about this evening work on creating a couples bucket list. Your list can be trips, extravagant things, or even simple things like eating dinner off the floor (Check!)

I Love You (in 5 years)

Image
Did you ever write a letter to your future self? Tonight get out the pens, paper, and envelopes. Sit down at the table with your honey and write love letters to your "future spouse". Decide on a time frame-these could be for 1, 5,  or 10 years from now.  Of course while you sit and ponder what you want to say to them that they will read in a few years you are going to want the snackage! Have an array of snacks: healthy or indulgent, but really put in the time to create something that will be meaningful. Don't be afraid to be sappy and funny!
