Healthy Marriage Movie Guide --Sweet Home Alabama

Image
Communicating with the one you are married to is so important. Watch this movie and see the trouble that is caused by poor communication. Discuss: Scene 1: “Why would you want to marry me for anyway?” “So I can kiss you anytime I want.” What is your favorite thing about marriage? Melanie’s boyfriend proposes, and it is a huge surprise, but she says yes. What was your proposal like? Reminisce on this together. What qualities were important to you when you were deciding who to marry? Has that list of important qualities changed as you have grown and matured together? Melanie shows back up in Alabama. She heads on over to her HUSBAND’S house and asks (again) for a divorce (since she is now engaged to another man). They haven’t even talked in years and you can see that they pick back up where they left off: arguing. When disagreements go left unfinished it does not strengthen a relationship. What strength has come from you and your spouse finishin...

Trail Run!

Image
This year is the 14th Annual Round Mountain 5k Sunrise Challenge. Running as a couple can be so therapeutic, as you are challenging yourself, but also given an opportunity to push yourself to help your partner. I am more of a runner than my husband, but he has longer legs than I do....he's 6'4''. When we run together, typically he feels as though he is holding back to stay with me, but that changes after the endurance part comes to it and he is worn out before I am set on quitting. How ever you and your spouse work through such challenges, get outside and push yourself  on the sunrise challenge morning. It will soon be too hot to be out running. Head over to the Facebook Event Page  to get the details and try it out. It is a great way to support the community and get your Saturday started early and very productively. Marriage Reconnect "More than 80 percent of the time, it's the wife who brings up sticky marital issues, while the husband tries to avoid...

Disc Golf

Image
At Old Dominion Mine Park you can find a Disc Golf course right across from the Playground. Make use of this great space and throw some Frisbees!  Just try not to send them soaring to the  highway below! Marriage Reconnect A great way to strengthen any relationship is to learn something together. If you can throw a Frisbee, or even if you can't (your spouse can teach you!) Check out some details on how to play Disc Golf.   A simple tutorial on the different discs used in the sport Be sure to take advantage of this opportunity to chat with each other about anything. Dates are about making connections and when married it is often about reconnecting. Enjoy this laid back time to share things that have been going on in your lives.

Rah, Rah Radish!

Got gardening on the brain? Ever dabbled in gardening? In college my husband and I took a home gardening course together and really enjoyed the content. The most important thing I learned was that no matter where you live, how small your living quarters are, you can find a way to garden. There are so many great ideas online since the whole tiny living movement. You can garden in old soda bottles, cups, and more. When we were first married we got permission from our landlord to tear out some ugly bushes from a planter under our window and use the space for a garden. To maximize my gardening area I also planted tomato plants in some buckets that I bought for $1 at the Walmart bakery (they were old frosting buckets). (My first home garden! I think I need to take my advice on this date idea and get my garden going with my husband!) Marriage Reconnect  Put your heads together and decide on a gardening project, be it big or small, and get to it! Gardening is known to be very...

Historic Downtown Stroll

Image
Throughout my time in Globe I have noticed varying foot bridges and stairs in the old town area, over washes and up hill sides. Well, follow the directions at this link so that you can trek the "trails" that were once used for daily travel to and from work, school, and other activities in the old mining town of Globe.  This is a chance to look at your surroundings in a different way and from a different view..don't forget to hold hands! Marriage Reconnect Talk about and analyze your physical touch with your spouse. It is so important to be physically connected in our day to day coming and goings. Do you kiss each other throughout the day? Do you hug before one of you leaves the house? Set a goal that will increase your physical touch and see what difference it can make in your love connection.

Lap. Lap. Lap. Lap. MILE

Yeah I'm Into fitness...Fittin' dis whole pizza in my mouth! That joke just never gets old! This day date is all about challenging each other. If you dish a challenge, you have to take the challenge. You and your spouse are on the same team. So, head to the Globe track and start walking and/or running some laps. After each lap take turns dishing out a fitness challenge. Challenge Ideas: 5 push-ups long jump---2 jumps each 10 sit-ups 30 seconds of high -knees  10 squats lay down--20 leg lifts Marriage Reconnect When our bodies are busy, our minds are free to wander. As your mind wanders from topic to topic, talk it out. How often during a regular week do you just TALK with your spouse? Talk and Listen while you move your bodies. As time passes and laps are made, topics will more easily come to mind than when in passing you ask how the other is doing. If you must, go grab some pizza when you are done...because you may still be thinking...

Date Night

Image
This date is all about flirting, dressing up, thinking of the other, chivalry, and really all the things. Start the day being flirtatious. Ideas: write a love note on the bathroom mirror  make breakfast for the other  leave a note in his lunch  kiss before work bring home flowers dress up let her get ready for the date kid free! Pick her up--ring the door bell! wear perfume open her door Wherever you decide to eat, get comfortable. Don't rush through this meal (like we all tend to do). Enjoy appetizers, entrees, and dessert. Don't be afraid of extravagance. Marriage Reconnect This breaks you out of the habit of only doing certain things when occasion calls for it. You can "celebrate" when there is "nothing" to celebrate. Recognize how good it felt to do something special and try to implement more of the spark back into your relationship. Watch the following video together:  Be genuinely interested in your spouse!

Spice up your date with this game. It's time to be lip locked. Is it possible to kiss your husband or wife too much? No, just no. That is not even a question. At the start of your date, make some rules. You need a list of trigger words and topics that if brought up will = kisses. You want there to be a lot of random kissing! PDA please! Some time during your date play the following game: You need to have a full conversation without your lips parting. So talk and kiss at the same time. You're Welcome!

Copy Cat Instead of Eat Out

Image
Is there one thing you order every time you go out to eat? Have you ever thought of recreating that delicious plate at home? Decide ahead of time on a dish you and your spouse would like to recreate---get all necessary ingredients. Spend this evening in the kitchen creating together. This would probably best be done when kids are in bed or in front of a movie. I love chalupas from Taco Bell, but I wanted an alternative to it, because I was living far from a Taco Bell. I found a recipe online and got to work. I MADE MY OWN CHALUPAS and my husband also affirmed that he loves chalupas! Really, the possibilities are endless with this date night! Marriage Reconnect During this date, possibly while enjoying your copied food of choice, discuss media boundaries. John Gottman in his book, "The 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work", said,                                        ...

Bowling!

Image
Oh, you didn't know there was a place to bowl in the Globe area? Well, there isn't really in the traditional sense, but this date gets you outside and doing something a little different. Some prep work is needed.  Need: A bowling ball (or 2)----these can be found at pretty much any thrift store Glow sticks 10 similar sized containers filled with water (water bottles, old soda bottles, Gatorade bottles....) great shoes (really this could just be a great addition----everyone where their "best bowling shoes") Little Caesars pizza Head to the Community Center Park or anywhere else with a stretch of flat concrete that can act as your bowling lane. Put a glow stick in each bottle and then use the rest of the glow sticks to line the sides of the "alley".  The rest is really up to you......can you even hit any of the "pins"?  Of course you will have to take turns setting up pins and bowling.  Enjoy your pizza! STEM Fest

Image
STEM Fest comes around every year at the end of April. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. This would be a unique date to take your spouse on. This is a great way to get out in the community on a Saturday and have fun! There is seriously something fun for all ages.  Once you're finished up here, head to Miami and stop in at Soda Pops--Old Fashioned Soda Fountain. The old time feel here is something to relish in! Marriage Reconnect Try something new--maybe enter the 5K Run together and cheer each other on--whoever is more of a runner/athlete than the other...hold back if you need to and stick with your cute partner. It will be fun to accomplish something together.

This is Our Theme Song

Image
Nest down at the Copper Hen for some unique cuisine. The atmosphere is fun and the smells coming from the kitchen will make it hard to decide on what to order. There is often live music to enjoy while you experience the flavor blasts occurring in your mouth. Music is the second focus of this date night.  Marriage Reconnect    Do you and your spouse have a special song? A wedding song? Does it represent you well? Whether you do or don't, find a theme song for your relationship.  Maybe share some of your favorite music from times past. Do you have similar music tastes?  Have fun listening to different tracks and finding something that can be your go to song. Share your favorite songs from high school and middle school. This could be interesting!

Stretch Yourself

Image
One of the best dates my husband and I have done was simply to go for a run at night. We parked at a random place in town and went for a run in an area we hadn't been in before. It was fun to be out at night, exploring in a different way. After our run (also, we may or may not have walked some too.....but we stretched our abilities!), we landed ourselves on one of the walking sky bridges that extend across Ash St. Before your date, decide on what kind of picnic dinner you want to do. Going along with the theme of the date...stretching/improving, you could follow what we did, by having different fresh veggies chopped up and bring a container of ranch. You could also bring wraps or just deli meat and cheese. A healthful night! Marriage Reconnect Share with your spouse your craziest/biggest, serious/funny goals and dreams. How can your spouse help you reach your goals? Remember before you were married and the world seemed wide open before you and you were excited ab...
