Make it at Home...ICE CREAM

Image
Seriously though, if you are an ice cream fan or human you probably love homemade ice cream. I am pretty much ice cream's biggest fan and my husband really enjoys eating ice cream with me. We have some great late night conversations over ice cream. If you are running short on time or energy for a date night, homemade ice cream and chatting on the porch is a fantastic idea. You can get creative with your add-in's if you'd like. Create your own peanut butter and chocolate ice cream or strawberry...really you could think of SO many options. Marriage Reconnect A great discussion to have while you are relaxing together is about hot topics or things that tend to bring up the stress between the two of you. I don't mean discuss these things for date night, but rather make a plan for when these topics can and should be brought up. I have this nasty habit of throwing a pie in my husband's face the second he walks in the door after work (figuratively).  Though I know...

Steak House

Image
Fancy dates are a great way to get out and see each other in a different setting. Your spouse is the person you should want to look your best for; their opinion counts the most. Get ready and go out to the Apache Gold Casino for date night.  A steakhouse is a great choice for date night--a hearty meal and great time for conversation. Marriage Reconnect Time to get to know your spouse even more! Take time to think up things  your spouse may not know about you and play 2 truths and a lie together. It is interesting how even 5 years with my husband; there are things that come up often that I must not have told him about myself, he forgot, or that just seem to be a mystery. Have a fun filled night without the regular, day to day worries!

Crawdadin'

Image
Have you ever caught crawdads? Look it up and decide on a method of how you want to go about getting them. You are going to want to be able to catch enough to have a little fry and enjoy them! Head out to Roosevelt Lake and hangout while trying to catch crawdads. One hot summer night we were out there wading only about knee deep, but had a great time catching them by hand....I may or may not have just observed the whole "catching" part.  😆 Marriage Reconnect It's so cool that there is a lake close where you can enjoy different types of recreation. Get out at night and enjoy looking up at the stars. Remember to live in the moment. This is something that is hard to do with the day in and day out monotonousness of life, but it is probably something that you and your spouse enjoyed doing when you were first together.

Ghost Town

Image
You live in an old, Arizona ghost/mining town. This town is full of rich history and the history is alive! Keep up on the schedules of different tours and happenings in Globe. This would be a great date. There are jail tours, tours of the old courthouse building (currently the Post Office), and Cemetery Tours.    There are exciting presentations happening at different times throughout the year that will take you back to a time once alive in Globe. There were outlaws and many other exciting things happening. Marriage Reconnect Depending on what community tour or activity you participate in, it will be a great opportunity to be with your honey. There are really great ghost stories in all the tours, which leaves a lot to discuss. These kinds of dates are much more interactive than watching a movie together.

Fine Arts

Image
Head to the Cobre Valley Center for the Arts ---They have great local theatre productions featuring talent from all ages. Enjoy the atmosphere in the old courthouse building, watching acts on the second floor stage.  Follow CVCA on Facebook for an update on all events. Marriage Reconnect Afterwards, discuss what you saw, heard, and felt. Get to know your spouse through the arts. What moves them? Learn what they appreciate and understand their feelings on different subjects. It is important for us to be connected and vulnerable in different ways. You may learn something new about each other through the conversation you have on reviewing the production.

In Sickness and In Health

Image
Do you know how to take care of your spouse? What if they could no longer do some day to day things? Are there things that they do that you just wouldn't be able to fill in for...or it would be quite difficult? For this stay at home date you are going to take care of each other. Him --Do you know how to do your wife's hair? Hairspray, Dry Shampoo, Braids, Curling Irons, Serums.... Take her directions and get to work! Her --Can you shave his face without all the nick's? Spray out some shaving cream and wield that razor! Marriage Reconnect Do you know your spouse's snack preferences? Before the evening starts each of you separately purchase the snacks that you think your spouse would choose for movie night/date night. Drink, chips/crackers, ice cream, gum, candy, whatever it may be. Surprise each other with what you got when you were thinking about the other.

Chinese Dinner

Image
Bring Beijing to your living room. Study up on the culture a bit and decorate your date night space (living room floor?).  Get take out from China Taste Buffet   and don't be afraid to try to dress the part as well. (Hong Kong) Marriage Reconnect  We don't always get opportunities to take vacations with our spouses, so relish in this evening...pretending to be in a far-a-way place. Together, learn origami or watch an Asian film (Jackie Chan?).  Talk about a place you would like to visit and make plans (real or pretend) for how you are going to make it happen--budget, babysitters, etc.

Date Night

Image
This date is all about flirting, dressing up, thinking of the other, chivalry, and really all the things. Start the day being flirtatious. Ideas: write a love note on the bathroom mirror  make breakfast for the other  leave a note in his lunch  kiss before work bring home flowers dress up let her get ready for the date kid free! Pick her up--ring the door bell! wear perfume open her door Wherever you decide to eat, get comfortable. Don't rush through this meal (like we all tend to do). Enjoy appetizers, entrees, and dessert. Don't be afraid of extravagance. Marriage Reconnect This breaks you out of the habit of only doing certain things when occasion calls for it. You can "celebrate" when there is "nothing" to celebrate. Recognize how good it felt to do something special and try to implement more of the spark back into your relationship. Watch the following video together:  Be genuinely interested in your spouse!

K. I. S. S. I. N. G.

Spice up your date with this game. It's time to be lip locked. Is it possible to kiss your husband or wife too much? No, just no. That is not even a question. At the start of your date, make some rules. You need a list of trigger words and topics that if brought up will = kisses. You want there to be a lot of random kissing! PDA please! Some time during your date play the following game: You need to have a full conversation without your lips parting. So talk and kiss at the same time. You're Welcome!

A Taste of the Best

Image
Living in Globe, there are many options for Mexican eateries and there is often talk about what joint is the  best. Tonight, be food critics. Burger House seems to be one of the top rated places in the area. Who would have thought a 'burger house' would be the best Mexican food? My husband talked this place up, having burros from here a few times. I brushed it off, because I love Mexican food, but Mexican food is Mexican food. Then one morning, for a date, my husband got us some burros from here and in my critical opinion....you just have to taste for yourself!.... Marriage Reconnect Be total food critics on this date. Describe as best you can, details are very important, the flavor, texture, and look of the food you ordered. Enjoy sharing this meal together. Put phones and other distractions aside and be fully present, in the moment. There are so many things taking our time and attention from each other--here is an opportunity to be intentional with where you focu...

Copy Cat Instead of Eat Out

Image
Is there one thing you order every time you go out to eat? Have you ever thought of recreating that delicious plate at home? Decide ahead of time on a dish you and your spouse would like to recreate---get all necessary ingredients. Spend this evening in the kitchen creating together. This would probably best be done when kids are in bed or in front of a movie. I love chalupas from Taco Bell, but I wanted an alternative to it, because I was living far from a Taco Bell. I found a recipe online and got to work. I MADE MY OWN CHALUPAS and my husband also affirmed that he loves chalupas! Really, the possibilities are endless with this date night! Marriage Reconnect During this date, possibly while enjoying your copied food of choice, discuss media boundaries. John Gottman in his book, "The 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work", said,                                        ...

Take Me Out to the Ball Game!

Image
Local sporting events can be a really great way to get out and enjoy some community excitement. For this date, check out the schedule for the High School or Middle School sports and head to a game! Going to a Globe-Miami Rival game would be even more of a riot than your typical Friday night game. Marriage Reconnect Option 1 for sport lovers: Talk about the sports you played---teammates, friends made, favorite sport, etc.  What sport or activity would you and your spouse like to get into together? Are there local teams or clubs you could join? Option 2 for lovers of other things: What activity do you enjoy being involved in? If you have a child that really wants to get into a sport--how are you going to support them in it, especially if it is far from your thing? (Globe Tigers!)

Bowling!

Image
Oh, you didn't know there was a place to bowl in the Globe area? Well, there isn't really in the traditional sense, but this date gets you outside and doing something a little different. Some prep work is needed.  Need: A bowling ball (or 2)----these can be found at pretty much any thrift store Glow sticks 10 similar sized containers filled with water (water bottles, old soda bottles, Gatorade bottles....) great shoes (really this could just be a great addition----everyone where their "best bowling shoes") Little Caesars pizza Head to the Community Center Park or anywhere else with a stretch of flat concrete that can act as your bowling lane. Put a glow stick in each bottle and then use the rest of the glow sticks to line the sides of the "alley".  The rest is really up to you......can you even hit any of the "pins"?  Of course you will have to take turns setting up pins and bowling.  Enjoy your pizza! Architect It!

Image
Get creative here. You will need LOTS of popsicle sticks.......so get eating those popsicles! Actually, you better just go buy a big pack...it will save you some hassle. Spend time together on this home date designing and building your dream home using popsicle sticks and hot glue. This can be a fun way to visualize the concepts you both may dream about. Marriage Reconnect Enjoy popsicles as a sweet treat and talk about how your day went. So often we get to the point of asking, "How was your day?" and the answer is short, sweet, and really doesn't get to the point. Dive in on this question...get a play by play of each other's day. Break the surface level answer and get to know what happens in his/her world when you are apart.

This is Our Theme Song

Image
Nest down at the Copper Hen for some unique cuisine. The atmosphere is fun and the smells coming from the kitchen will make it hard to decide on what to order. There is often live music to enjoy while you experience the flavor blasts occurring in your mouth. Music is the second focus of this date night.  Marriage Reconnect    Do you and your spouse have a special song? A wedding song? Does it represent you well? Whether you do or don't, find a theme song for your relationship.  Maybe share some of your favorite music from times past. Do you have similar music tastes?  Have fun listening to different tracks and finding something that can be your go to song. Share your favorite songs from high school and middle school. This could be interesting!

Nurd Lyfe

Image
NurdBerger is a great burger joint and it screams nerd! Sometimes we just need to be as confident as a nerd and that is what this date is about. How confident can you be as a couple? What is a nerdy movie or show that the two of you can agree on? Featured at the Nurdberger Cafe is Lord of The Rings, Star Wars, Pokemon, and more. The possibilities are endless. Start your date by dressing up in some way--related to something nerdy. This date is bound to bring out some laughs and you may relish in the attention or hurry home from embarrassment. Get into character and enjoy some good food! Finish the date at home watching one of your favorite nerdy movies.

Stretch Yourself

Image
One of the best dates my husband and I have done was simply to go for a run at night. We parked at a random place in town and went for a run in an area we hadn't been in before. It was fun to be out at night, exploring in a different way. After our run (also, we may or may not have walked some too.....but we stretched our abilities!), we landed ourselves on one of the walking sky bridges that extend across Ash St. Before your date, decide on what kind of picnic dinner you want to do. Going along with the theme of the date...stretching/improving, you could follow what we did, by having different fresh veggies chopped up and bring a container of ranch. You could also bring wraps or just deli meat and cheese. A healthful night! Marriage Reconnect Share with your spouse your craziest/biggest, serious/funny goals and dreams. How can your spouse help you reach your goals? Remember before you were married and the world seemed wide open before you and you were excited ab...

Need a Babysitter? No Problem!

Image
Wouldn't it be nice not to have to pay a babysitter every time you wanted to get out alone? There are a lot of other couples thinking the same thing. Spend this date night setting up a babysitting rotation with some other couples. Decide on a group of friends and text them to see if they are interested. Set to work figuring out details. Possibility:  First Friday of every month two of the 4-6 couples involved take a turn to watch all the kiddos while the other couples go out. Those going out can decide if they want to do a group date or disperse. You get a free date night or two for every time you "take one for the team" and handle the zoo of children.

Hey Doodle Doodle!

Image
Take a course together! There are great online courses that you can take, even at your own pace. Try something like this Doodling Course by Rad and Happy. Get creative as you work on your drawing skills together. Marriage Reconnect Don't take yourselves too seriously, you can still doodle on your page during class. Enjoy sitting next to your favorite person during class...you can even whisper to each other and you probably won't get in trouble! Compliment your spouse on this date. Compliment, compliment, compliment. You can't compliment too much and we are working on creating a habit with this one...practice! Compliment their doodling, how they hold their pen, etc. Compliment their eyes or their beautiful hands. Don't be afraid to be a little corny!

Quick Night Out

Image
Head to Vida e Caffé   for a little coffee shop date. Even if you can't leave the kids at home, bring them along. They have a great little kid's area in the back. There is a kid's size table and you can set them up watching a movie (free WiFi!) while you and your Honey enjoy a treat together. Check out their page for Live Music nights as well! Marriage Reconnect Split a date shake--how fitting, since you are going to be on a date! You could play a board game or play two truths and a lie. Enjoy the ambiance of this fun cafe and spend time gazing into each other's eyes.
